Panama Travel Information: Travel to Bocas del Toro

The International Airport (Tocumen) in Panama City is served by many of the major airlines, from Europe and the USA (there are at least six American cities with flights into Tocumen). And with two local carriers (Aeroperlas and AirPanama) providing four daily flights into Bocas del Toro, getting here is both quick and easy. To fly to Bocas, you will first need to go to Albrook National Airport (Aeropuerto Marcos A. Gelabert) - which is about 45 minutes from Tocumen. You may well want to stay overnight in Panama City, and there are many moderately-priced hotels ($20-$40) near the Albrook National Airport.

Travel to Bocas from Panama City: by car

Take the Interamerican Highway up to entrance to Gualaca (404 Km). Turn to the right and go to the end of the road to Chiriqui Grande (95 Km)nd then, in Punta Peña, the road to Almirante, where you can leave the car in secure parking. Roads are paved and in good condition. There are beautiful views of the mountains of the Continental Divide en route.

Travel to Bocas from Panama City: by bus

There are direct buses from Panama City to Bocas del Toro. These go via Almirante. The bus takes approximately ten hours and the cost is $25 USD. The bus departs from Gran Terminal Nacional de Transporte, near Marcos Galabert (Albrook) Airport (tel: +507 232.5803).

Bocas Ferry

In Almirante take a marine taxi to Bocas del Toro ($4 - 1/2 hour) or the ferry boat Almirante-Bocas del Toro, which only runs once a day at 8am ($5 - approximately 20 minutes).

Travel to Bocas from David: by car

Take the Interamerican Highway up to the entrance to Gualaca (10 Km). Turn left and go (to the end of the road) to Chiriqui Grande (95 Km) and then, in Punta PePeña, take the road to Almirante. Here you can park the car. Roads are in good condition, and there are breathtaking views of the mountains, Volcan Barú and the surrounding rainforest.
