Bocas del Toro is among the most bio-diverse areas in the world. So it’s no surprise that The Smithsonian’s Tropical Research Institute, the only bureau of the Smithsonian Institution based outside of the United States, has an active research and education facility in Bocas del Toro near Sunset Point.
The research station attracts researchers and students from around the world who come to the area to study its tropical habitat. Tours are also available.
Because of its proximity to the equator, Bocas (like all of Panama) is hurricane free, so there are no worries about having to cope with those potentially devastating storms.
The area is blessed with wonderful year-round tropical weather. The average yearly temperature is 82 degrees Fahrenheit, or 28 degrees Celsius. Dry season in Panama runs from mid-December to May, while green season runs from May to mid-December when refreshing rains renew the lushness of the land. |
